The Best Parts of My Valley of Flowers Hike
1. The Valley of Flowers
The stunning valley was the highlight of the hike for me and one of my most vivid memories of the whole experience. You can see a rainbow of colours spread out before you as you look down into the valley from the top. Over ten kilometres in length, the valley is at least a couple of kilometres across. The carpet was spread out in front of me, its width and length awash in pink, blue, and yellow waves.
You can tell you’re supposed to continue further because there’s a winding path through the flowers. Different kinds of blossoms have recently become visible to you. Not only in terms of colours, but also in terms of shapes, sizes, textures, and aromas. A new kind of bloom is just tens of steps away. You can’t help but wonder who brought them all the way here. When did the variety start shifting? Changes in the large animals were just as fascinating to observe as the flora.
I tried to blend in with the vast flora of the valley by standing among the flowers, sitting next to them, and even lying down on the narrow, open path. From the glacier end of the valley, a refreshing mountain breeze carried unfamiliar smells.
2. The Climb and Hemkund Sahib
It’s possible to complete the hike to the Valley of Flowers in a day, but the ascent to Hemkund is a far more difficult proposition. You climb about 13,000 feet in elevation in just over 6 kilometres. You are sent to a scenic area you weren’t expecting and given a new task as a result.
My favourite part of the hike up to Hemkund was entering the alpine zone. Over the climb, you can almost feel like you’re looking down on Ghangaria and the Valley of Flowers from a drone or helicopter. It’s possible to track your movements throughout the entire previous day. Even the most beautiful landscapes look different from above.
3. The cultural experience
Traveling through the Valley of Flowers is more than just a hike. It takes you on a journey of faith alongside a journey to the picturesque valley. On this magnificent hike to the lake at 14,000 feet, you’ll meet people of all ages and stages of life. Many use horses or men to help them, while many trek on their own strength.
It warmed my heart to see volunteers at Hemkund Sahib Gurdwara cleaning the entire road in order to keep it clean despite the bitter cold. Hearing the Sikh Gurudwara’s dawn march cries while staying in Ghangaria was a fantastic experience. You get to see parts of the world that you normally wouldn’t have the chance to.
